The Edscape Conference is right around the corner and in addition to all of the great professional development workshops we will be conducting there are many more that we are really excited about. There are three amazing featured speakers, including keynote George Couros, and over 30 different 1-hour sessions being offered throughout the day.

For a complete list of sessions, visit the conference website. From there you can also register online. Here are six that we’re excited about:

1. Increasing Family Involvement through Digital Tools

Presented by Dana Sirotiak of Hackensack Public Schools and Will Diaz from Fort Lee Public Schools in New Jersey, this workshop will allow attendees to leave with multiple means on how to improve family engagement. In order to create a more transparent partnership between the home and school, the integration of digital tools and social media breaks down several communication barriers.

2. Nearpod: An Engaging Experience

blog-thumb-nearpodWe love Nearpod! Presented by Daniel Gallagher of West Windsor-Plainsboro Regional School District, NJ, transform your lessons using a mobile device and the Nearpod app. Teachers can push out a variety of slides to student devices which are informative and interactive. The students submit responses that appear on the Teacher’s device, as well as the teacher can login after the lesson and look at assessment reports. Best of all, it is a free app! Works on iOS or Android devices. Bring your device with the app installed to this workshop, it will be fun!

3. Schools without Walls

Education is rapidly changing as technology makes the world a global village, which is often held in the palm of our hand. This reality makes the student desire a more experiential educational experience, one that is beyond the walls of the school building. The drive for CBI- Community Based Instruction and CTE – Career and Technical Education is a current response to that desire. Join presenter Robert Hans of New Milford High School to learn, share, and discuss what this means for the educator and student as we prepare students for their 21st Century Lives and Careers.

4. Scratch and Programming

blog-thumb-scratchProgramming and learning to code is an essential 21st century skill. Schools everywhere are embracing coding as part of the curriculum. Scratch, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is a great way to start. Scratch is a free cross-platform programming application that allows student to create games, animations and simulations. In this session, presenter Samantha Morra will discuss the core ideas underlying Scratch, guide participants through a set of introductory hands-on activities, and discuss strategies for integrating Scratch into classroom practice.

5. The Next Gen Learning Organization

Presented by Dr. William Brennan, Farmingdale School District, NY, this facilitated discussion will promote the next generation learning organization. This work is based on a national study of principals and virtual learning as a means to enhance professional learning, organizational change and innovative teaching and learning practices. Dr. Brennan will challenge us to look beyond the surface barriers technology may present to the opportunities that knowledge sharing and fluid interaction offer our students and educators. It’ll address the various antecedents to any organization seeking to accelerate individual and organizational change.
